Senior Development Engineer – Electronic and wireless systems – Laurentians, Canada

Reporting to the Senior Technology Manager – Wireless, you are the technical expert in electronic and wireless systems for Orica Initiating Systems (IS) global community.  You are responsible for the development of next generation of wireless and electronic blasting products (WebGen/EBS),

  • Manage development electronics products projects globally (firmware/hardware). Develop intellectual property.
  • Maintain safety critical systems.
  • Assure regulatory authority liaison for products in Europe, Americas, EU, Asia and Africa.
  • Provide global technical advice and support on products with customers, suppliers and contractors globally.

Key activities

  • Develop safety critical systems, including documented verification and validation systems, and according to appropriate global and regional standards. Ensure compliance for electronics matters, developing documentation and managing process.
  • Lead products Technology projects/initiatives: create, develop and test control firmware and software in accordance with IEC61508 and able to understand / analyse electronic control hardware design.
  • Contribute to the development of detailed, verifiable, Safety Specifications and User Needs Specifications (UNS) for products.
  • Provide timely, effective and appropriate technical support for products globally including fault investigation and problem solving, both in the lab and in the field on customer sites.
  • Support to our customers in the Americas region and the manufacturing sites and to the field use of products, including accountability for agreed objectives, budgets, and deadlines. When required, assist global projects and plants.
  • Generate new ideas for wireless technology through diverse means such as: literature studies, customer contact, and surveillance of new technologies in other industries, benchmarking, and sharing of ideas within the Orica IS global community.

Preferred Experience

  • PhD or Master in Electronic Engineering or relevant science discipline in accordance with the position (Physics, Material Science…)
  • More than 5 years’ experience in project management: R&D development and improvement electronic products projects (firmware/hardware).
  • More than 10 years’ technical / operational experience in a highly regulated industry.
  • Experience in explosives will be consider as an asset but not mandatory.

  • Expert in wireless communications and electronic systems (firmware / hardware).
  • Abilities to develop intellectual property.
  • Creative and analytical thinking.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Good reporting skills.
