The company

Tata Steel Minerals Canada Limited (TSMC) is a company that was formed to develop an Iron Ore project near Schefferville, Quebec on the border of Newfoundland and Labrador. TSMC is a joint venture between Tata Steel Limited (80%) and New Millennium Iron Corp (20%).

The projects

The mine and milling project is referred to as the Direct Shipping Ore (DSO) Project. It consists of upgrading high grade hematite ore to produce 4 MT/YR of sinter fines. The project is currently in the construction stage and due to start-up in 2012. TSMC and New Millennium are also involved in a feasibility study of a much larger Taconite Project.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Sr. Director, Projects, the Intermediate Cost and Scheduling Specialist will actively participate in the monitoring and reporting of the project costs and schedule.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide cost Engineering, Scheduling and estimating services for the Project as per directions from the Sr. Director, Project
  • Strong individual with a mindset to reduce cost on the Project
  • Liaison with the Project Controls Manager , Construction Manager , EPCM on regular basis and be aware of any work on project which might have schedule and / or cost implications
  • Assist Project Cost Control Manager with regard to Costs Incurred on the contract
  • Evaluate EPCM Contractor Base line schedule, progress curves and Schedule reforecast based on actual field progress, workforce and the actual site performance
  • Analyze trends /productivities. Highlight potential impacts of changes on Cost / Schedule
  • Analyze and assist in preparing the cost forecasts in the face of cost pressure and optimism from project teams. Maintain consistency in cost bases through rigorous adherence to the controls processes
  • Review Contractors payment applications for accuracy and conformance with progress and terms of Payment
  • From monthly cost reports, using Project Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) highlighting variances from the plan on commitment, value of work done, management of changes against approved Control Cost Estimate
  • Willing to travel to project site when required

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 to 10 years’ experience preferably in large scale industrial construction projects
  • Thorough knowledge of cost Engineering principles
  • Excellent computer skills with working knowledge of Cost Engineering Principles and Cost and Schedule planning software
  • Outstanding communication in both English and French languages
  • Preferably undergraduate degree in Engineering discipline
  • Excellent communication skills
